5 Essential Jobs for Your Brighton Garden This August

August in Brighton is a beautiful thing. The sun is (mostly!) out, the city is buzzing, and our gardens are in full bloom. But as we head into the last month of summer, a little bit of work now will pay off hugely, keeping your garden looking fantastic right through into the autumn.

Here at Rooted & Co., we're not just about houseplants anymore! We're now out and about helping people in their gardens. So, here are our top five essential jobs to tackle in your garden this August.

1. Deadhead, Deadhead, Deadhead! This is the single most effective thing you can do right now. Go out with a pair of snips and remove all the spent, faded flowers from your roses, geraniums, cosmos, and dahlias. This simple act stops the plant from putting energy into making seeds and encourages it to produce a whole new flush of flowers, extending the show for weeks to come.

2. Give Your Pots Some Love Your pots and hanging baskets have been working hard all summer and are probably running out of steam. Give them a good, deep soak (preferably in the evening) and treat them to a liquid feed, like a seaweed or tomato feed. This will give them the boost they need for one final, glorious display.

3. Tidy Up Your Lawn Edges A quick win that makes a huge difference! Even if you don't have time for a full mow, just taking a pair of shears or a strimmer to the edges of your lawn will make the entire garden look instantly sharper, neater, and more professional. It’s a five-minute job with maximum impact.

4. Prune Summer-Flowering Shrubs Have you got shrubs like Lavender, Philadelphus (Mock Orange), or Weigela that have finished flowering? Now is the perfect time to give them a light prune. By cutting back the stems that have already flowered, you encourage strong new growth that will carry next year's blooms.

5. Plan for Autumn Colour It might feel early, but the best gardens are always thinking one season ahead. August is the perfect time to pop in some late-season stars. Think about adding some Japanese Anemones, Rudbeckia, or Asters to a gap in your border. Planting them now allows them to establish before they put on their brilliant autumn show.

We hope these tips help you enjoy your garden for the rest of the summer. Of course, we know that time is precious. If you'd rather spend your weekend at the beach than weeding, that's what our new Rooted & Co. Garden Care service is for!
