The Ultimate Student Guide to Houseplants in Brighton

A huge welcome to all the new and returning students! Moving to Brighton is an amazing adventure, and one of the first things on your list will be making that new student room or shared house feel like home.

It’s easy for student rooms to feel a bit bare and impersonal, but we've got the perfect, low-cost solution: houseplants! A touch of green can instantly make a space feel more alive, more personal, and even help you study by purifying the air.

But we get it – you're on a budget, your room might not get much light, and you've got lectures to attend. So, here are our top 5, student-proof houseplants that will thrive in your new Brighton pad.

1. The Snake Plant (Sansevieria) If you buy one plant, make it this one. It's the king of low-maintenance. It thrives on neglect, only needs watering about once a month, and is brilliant at purifying the air. Its upright, architectural leaves look super stylish and take up very little floor space.

2. The Golden Pothos This is the perfect trailing plant to hang from a shelf or the top of a wardrobe, adding a lush, jungle vibe. The best part? It's incredibly forgiving. It will literally droop to tell you when it's thirsty and perks right back up after a drink. It's happy in almost any light condition.

3. The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) Another unkillable hero. The ZZ plant has beautiful, glossy, deep green leaves and is famous for tolerating very low light levels, making it perfect for a north-facing room or a gloomy corner. Like the Snake Plant, it needs very little water.

4. The Spider Plant A retro classic for a reason! It's incredibly easy to care for, famously non-toxic (in case you have house pets), and produces little "baby" spiderettes that you can re-pot and give to your new housemates. It’s the plant that keeps on giving.

5. The Peace Lily Want something with flowers? The Peace Lily is your answer. It produces beautiful, elegant white blooms and is another plant that tolerates lower light. It's also very dramatic and will droop its leaves to let you know it needs a drink – impossible to kill by accident!
