Hydrangea Macrophylla
The Hydrangea macrophylla is a robust deciduous shrub renowned for its large, globe-like floral clusters and broad, serrated leaves. A notable characteristic of this species is its ability to change flower color based on the soil's pH level, producing blue blooms in acidic soils and pink in alkaline conditions. It provides substantial structure and enduring color to partially shaded borders and large outdoor containers throughout the summer months.
Care Guide:
| Perfect for | Large patio pots, partially shaded borders, and woodland displays |
| Light required | Partial shade. It thrives with gentle morning sun but requires protection from harsh afternoon heat to prevent the large leaves from wilting. |
| Water | Requires consistently moist soil. Water deeply and regularly during hot or dry spells, especially when grown in containers, while ensuring adequate drainage. |
| Hardiness | Fully hardy (H5). It is deciduous and will drop its leaves in winter. Leave the faded, dry flower heads intact over winter to protect the developing spring buds from frost. |
| Pollinators | Lacecap varieties are highly attractive to bees and hoverflies, while the denser mophead varieties provide excellent structural cover for garden wildlife. |
| Toxicity | Toxic to humans and pets if ingested. |
| Flowering period | Blooms consistently from mid-summer through to early autumn. |
| Growth rate | Moderate to fast-growing, naturally forming a rounded, bushy shrub that typically reaches 1-2 metres in height and spread upon maturity. |
| Pot size | Currently in a 11cm nursery pot. |
