Tamarindus indicac 'Tamarind Plant'
The Tamarind is a tropical tree often cultivated indoors as a striking, structural houseplant or bonsai subject. It features delicate, feathery, pinnate leaves that exhibit nyctinasty, naturally folding closed at night. While it is unlikely to produce its famous pod like fruits indoors, its graceful, fern-like foliage and woody stems provide a highly unique, tree-like presence to warm, well lit indoor environments.
Care Guide:
| Perfect for | Warm conservatories, bright windowsills, and bonsai cultivation |
| Light required | Requires plenty of bright, direct sunlight to thrive and maintain its dense, feathery foliage. |
| Water | Keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season, allowing only the top few centimetres to dry out. Reduce watering significantly during the winter. |
| Humidity | Thrives in high humidity but adapts to average room conditions. Regular misting or a pebble tray is highly beneficial. |
| Toxicity | Non toxic to humans and pets. |
| Origin | Tropical Africa |
| Growth rate | Slow to moderate when grown indoors. It responds exceptionally well to pruning to maintain a compact size or specific architectural shape. |
| Pot size tip | Choose a pot cover with a 13cm opening |
